MORE THAN 200,000 cubic
yards of sand have been placed on Avalon's north end beaches
near 13th and 14th Streets. Sand pumping continues, with
work moving toward 9th Street. Once sand is fully placed
at the northern limit of the project, sand pumping will return
to the 14th Street area and begin moving southward to 25th
Street. Temporary closures occur in the immediate

sail. AJ Meerwald sails several times weekly from Cape May
through September 27th.

DREDGE EQUIPMENT has arrived in Avalon and set-up work
has begun. Pipes are being laid both in the water and on
the beach, equipment is staged on the beach, and work vessels
have been active in Townsend's Inlet. Some beach paths and
sections of beach have been closed temporarily as equipment is
moved or connected; closed areas will reopen as soon as it's
safe to do so. Look for actual sand pumping to begin this
week.
TOWNSENDS INLET
was the subject of a CBS News Philadelphia report, as the
growing beach on the Sea Isle side of the bridge has made it
difficult for vessels to navigate the drawbridge when they leave
or enter the inlet. The drawbridge, which raises to allow
passage of larger power vessels and sailboats, used to be near
the center of the inlet, but migrating beach sand has crept
closer and closer to the navigation channel. Wind and
tidal currents add to the challenge, making for a white-knuckle
experience for large vessels. CBS report and interview
features Captain Irv Hurd of the Miss Avalon who describes the
challenge of navigating the channel.
