LOOK FOR DREDGE EQUIPMENT
to begin mobilizing this week. With Strathmere's beach
replenishment project concluding, the start of Avalon's project
is now imminent. Avalon's beaches will remain open during
the replenishment project, with temporary rolling closures
occurring in the immediate vicinity of the work zone. When
Avalon's project concludes, the dredge and equipment will move
to Stone Harbor to begin that project.

1928 oyster schooner in Delaware Bay, where it spent its working

unwanted household items to Habitat for Humanity's ReStore?
Located in Cape May Court House, ReStore accepts appliances,
furniture, cabinets, home decor, lamps, artwork, some building
materials, outdoor furniture, tools, and more, and then resells
those items a reasonable prices. All donation proceeds go
directly toward home builds in Cape May County. Donations
can be dropped off Monday through Saturday from 10am to 5:30pm,

AVALON & STONE HARBOR
BEACHFILL UPDATE: According to a progress update issued
earlier this week, the first equipment will arrive in Avalon about
August 24th, and the dredge will appear in Townsend's Inlet between the
26th and 30th. Sand pumping will begin at 9th Street, potentially
before Labor Day weekend, and replenishment work will proceed southward
to 25th Street. The operation will continue 24/7, but is always
subject to weather, sea conditions, and mechanical breakdowns.
Work in Avalon is expected to conclude in early November, at which time
operations will shift to Stone Harbor. Work there will begin at
122nd Street moving northward to 120th Street, then resume at 113th
Street northward to 100th Street.
FISHING IS GOOD, by all accounts! Inshore catches of summer
flounder, weakfish, sheepshead and triggerfish have all been reported.
Offshore reports include catches of tuna, white marlin, and mahi mahi.
The annual MidAtlantic tournament takes place August 16th through 21st,
with 180 boats already registered.
ONE FISH not seen as often as usual
this year is the Atlantic Menhaden, more commonly known as "bunker".
Although not a gamefish, bunker are an important food source for
everything from porpoises to bluefish, as well as ospreys, who hunt them
from the air. Schools of bunker are usually seen on the ocean,
churning its surface as they're chased by predators below, but have been
notably absent this year. Officials say the species has not been
overfished, though local captains report noticeably fewer sightings this
year. The Cape May County Herald recently ran a story about it,
featuring Avalon captain and fisherman Jim Lutz.

AHLOA MEETING: The Avalon
Home and Land Owners Association invites you to its annual
meeting at Community Hall this Saturday (August 8th) at 9am.
Avalon Mayor John McCorriston will deliver his annual State of
the Borough address, followed by discussion on the proposed
Avalon Library and History facility, plus a Q&A with the Mayor,

A WHALE OF A SIGHTING!
Yes, a whale was spotted just off the beach a few days ago, in
the area between 92nd Street and 96th Street. The huge,
gentle creature could be seen surfacing and spouting beyond the
surf line, to the delight of beachgoers!
